The rock musical, based on the cult-classic movie from 1988, features a cast of teenagers facing the challenges of bullying, peer pressure, and gun violence within their high school.
Therefore, ART's artistic director Candice Kogut made it a point to cast the production with actors as close to high school age as possible.
“The production is ABOUT high school and the disconnect between teenagers and adults.
"Ultimately, it's incredibly timely and it was important that we didn't do the musical as a campy romp, but rather as an honest look at what it is to be in high school and to be faced with these situations. The piece has a lot of humor but it also has a lot of truth."
Candice chose this production for her directorial debut at ART because of its popularity with young performers. As director of the West Seneca Youth Theatre, she discovered many of her students were bringing songs from this show to auditions.
ART’s production of Heathers: The Musical includes students from West Seneca West, Frontier, Lewiston Porter, and Lancaster high schools, as well as students from SUNY Fredonia, Niagara University, Erie Community College, and Buffalo State.
