Selecting the program finalists is never an easy feat for our judges. Every school that applies for the Kenny Awards has an incredibly hard working creative team who provides incredible opportunities for the students. It is the unique aspects and creative ties that set certain schools and productions apart from the others. After reviewing 20 applications and spending three days speaking with every school that applied for the program, we are excited to announce our 10 Kenny Awards finalists for the 2015-2016 year:
Barker High School - Oklahoma!
Cardinal O'Hara High School - Anything Goes
City Honors School - Gypsy
Clarence High School - Young Frankenstein
Forestville Central School - Into the Woods
Fredonia High School - Elton John & Tim Rice's Aida
Frontier High School - The Addams Family
St. Francis High School - Jesus Christ Superstar
Williamsville East High School - The Wiz
Wilson Central High School - Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
After viewing the productions of all finalists, the Kenny judges will award the top schools and students for their efforts, including giving “The Kenny” for Outstanding Musical Production. The Kenny includes a $5,000 grant from the Lipke Foundation to be used solely by the school’s theatre department. Other awards include categories for individual performances in leading and supporting roles, as well as areas of technical production, orchestration, choreography, set design, and vocal performance.
The Kenny Awards strives to recognize and honor the hard work of Western New York high school students in musical productions. We also firmly believe in the educational and long-lasting lessons that theatre education provides, including the many transferable skills such as collaboration, team work, confidence, and empathy. As a result, our Kenny finalists will spend the entire day with us on Saturday, May 14 participating in complimentary theatre-based workshops, rehearsing on Shea's main stage, making new friends who share common interests, and, of course, participating in the awards ceremony.
The 2016 awards ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 14 at 6:00 pm. Tickets will be $8.00 advanced sale or $10.00 day of, and will go on sale on April 30 at 10:00 am. Visit sheas.org for more details.
In the meantime, we hope you will support our finalists' productions and the productions of all the other area high schools!
For over 25 years, hundreds of outstanding high school musical theatre productions in Western New York have been recognized and honored by The Kenny Awards.
