Applications for the 2019 Kenny Awards are now available for interested schools. Shea's Performing Arts Center and the Lipke Foundation are proud to announce some exciting updates for the 2018-2019 Kenny Awards program.
Overall, the program will be structured in the same way. Applications from interested schools must be submitted by 5:00 pm on Friday, October 12, 2018. All applicants will be asked to speak with the program judges the following week, October 15-19, about their program, goals, and objectives.
Ten finalists will be announced the following week. Those ten finalists will be required to attend a directors meeting with Shea’s staff and Kenny judges, who will review the process for the entire year. Only the ten finalist schools will be eligible for the awards. Schools that apply, but that are not accepted into the program will be offered the opportunity for judges and staff members from Shea’s to view their production and provide feedback. Directors from non-finalist schools will also be invited to attend Kenny Day on Saturday, May 11 to participate in the various theatre-based workshops provided and attend the awards ceremony.
The Kenny judging panel will view each of the ten finalists’ productions and complete evaluations. Feedback and nominations will be determined based on these evaluations and provided to the schools.
Nominees will be announced in mid-April 2019 (exact date tbd). All nominees must participate in the week-long coaching and additional assessment to be considered for the award. This training/assessment will take place April 29-May 4, 2019 at Shea’s Performing Arts Center. The week will include solo coaching, performance-based workshops, and rehearsals for a medley that will be performed by the nominees at the Kenny Ceremony on Saturday, May 11, 2019. All nominees will be given a toolkit with materials and tips to help prepare them for a career or college program in the arts. They will also complete an audition, similar to what they will experience at the Jimmy Awards, with area theatre professionals. The award winners will be selected following this session and announced at the Kenny Awards ceremony along with the other awards.
For over 25 years, hundreds of outstanding high school musical theatre productions in Western New York have been recognized and honored by The Kenny Awards.
